Butenolide Insecticide Flupyradifurone Affects Honey Bee Worker Antiviral Immunity and Survival

چکیده

Honey bees face many environmental stressors, including exposure to pesticides and pathogens. A novel butenolide pesticide, flupyradifurone, was recently introduced the US shown have a bee-friendly toxicity profile. Like much-scrutinized neonicotinoids that preceded it, flupyradifurone targets insect nervous system. Some been interfere with antiviral immunity, which raised concern similar effects may be observed flupyradifurone. In this study, we investigated how neonicotinoid, clothianidin, affect ability of honey bee workers combat an infection Israeli acute paralysis virus (IAPV). We exposed field-realistic doses either or without co-exposure virus, then tracked survival changes in viral titers. repeated experiment spring fall look for any seasonal effects. found caused elevated mortality fall, but it did not lead increased virus-induced mortality. Flupyradifurone also appeared clearance, as co-exposed pesticide tended higher titers after 48 hours than those alone. Clothianidin had no effect on titers, actually increase resistance bees.

Flupyradifurone: a brief profile of a new butenolide insecticide

BACKGROUND The development and commercialisation of new chemical classes of insecticides for efficient crop protection measures against destructive invertebrate pests is of utmost importance to overcome resistance issues and to secure sustainable crop yields. Flupyradifurone introduced here is the first representative of the novel butenolide class of insecticides active against various sucking ...

Worker Policing in the Honey Bee: Basic Facts and Ideas

Hymenopteran societies are non-clonal. As a result, there is potential conflict among individuals or groups of individuals over reproduction. One area of conflict is male production. In most eusocial Hymenoptera, workers cannot mate but retain functional ovaries. Hence, workers can manipulate their colony's male production simply by laying eggs. Individual workers should gain from causing the c...

RNAi and Antiviral Defense in the Honey Bee.

Honey bees play an important agricultural and ecological role as pollinators of numerous agricultural crops and other plant species. Therefore, investigating the factors associated with high annual losses of honey bee colonies in the US is an important and active area of research. Pathogen incidence and abundance correlate with Colony Collapse Disorder- (CCD-) affected colonies in the US and co...

Cytosine modifications in the honey bee (Apis mellifera) worker genome

Epigenetic changes enable genomes to respond to changes in the environment, such as altered nutrition, activity, or social setting. Epigenetic modifications, thereby, provide a source of phenotypic plasticity in many species. The honey bee (Apis mellifera) uses nutritionally sensitive epigenetic control mechanisms in the development of the royal caste (queens) and the workers. The workers are f...

Non-Specific dsRNA-Mediated Antiviral Response in the Honey Bee

Honey bees are essential pollinators of numerous agricultural crops. Since 2006, honey bee populations have suffered considerable annual losses that are partially attributed to Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD). CCD is an unexplained phenomenon that correlates with elevated incidence of pathogens, including RNA viruses. Honey bees are eusocial insects that live in colonies of genetically related i...
